Your Bio

In addition to running his wine import and marketing company, Dalla Terra, Brian Larky has: kayaked and rafted down more miles of river than Dr. Livingston, guided rivers in North America, Africa (including a four-month stint as head whitewater guide on the African Rainbow Equatorial Expedition, the first known crossing of equatorial Africa by boat through the waterways between the Indian and Atlantic Oceans), Europe and Asia. He has sailed the seven seas, including many transoceanic voyages and yacht races. He is a private, commercial and instrument rated pilot. He is a scuba Divemaster, catches big fish, and shreds deep powder from Cortina to Taos. He's climbed from Nepal to Tibet. Conservative estimate: he's probably taken 5,000 photos of fish, animals, mountains, boats, coastlines, an occasional kid. He is hopelessly addicted to the wild. What hasn't he done, you might ask yourself?

--Work for anyone but himself (outside of winery production jobs)

--Had a kid. Paid a mortgage

--Grown up, but he has gone to school: U.C. Davis Fermentation Sciences grad

Tuna Fishing - Intrepid 10 day Dec '07, Jan '08 : We left San Diego on Dec 26, 2007 aboard the just launched 115' sportfishing boat Intrepid, heading south to fish for "cows" yellowfin tuna over 200 lbs, which had been found off the west coast of Baja, NW of Cabo San Lucas. We were loaded for bear, big gear, "man shit" as our crazy mad professor captain called it. Water temps were off when we arrived in the fishing grounds so we continued south, waaaay south, till the water temps hit 78 degrees and I could almost see Costa Rica.... We ended up with limits of tuna, as well as some wahoo and yellowtail, but the fish were small compared to what we were targeting - there's always next time.
Cow-a-dung-a.

E Fork of the Carson River - May 06 : An annual Memorial Day trip for a loosly knit group of 25 or so, the East Carson is one of the few raftable rivers that flows down the steep east side of the Sierra. Named for the explorer Kit Carson, it drops quickly from its origins near Sonora pass and through the Carson-Iceburg Wilderness, before it passes by the charming town of Markleville where we put on for what should've been a scenic float. Later in the year, this is a fun easy trip, but early in the season with high water and low temperatures it can be another story. This trip was no exception with temperatures plunging to 23 degrees F as I drove to the put in and light on and off snowshowers through afternoon while were rafting. Luckily I'm built for cold weather...and loved every minute. It kept most of the typical Memorial Day riff-raff off the river and afforded our band of 25 new and old friends a wonderful few days on river to soak in the hot springs, enjoy food and (Italian)wine and sing around the campfire late into the night.

Le Voiles de St. Tropez 2004 : Very little rivals this venue for sheer sexiness, international participation and the mega yacht contingency. Essentially the last stop of the summer season on the Med racing circuit, it draws a cross section of top race boats primarily from the US and Europe together with the largest fleet of classic yachts going back to the 1880's. These are only day races which leaves plenty of opportunity to explore St. Tropez's many bars and restaurants which pepper the hillside and port beneath the castle for a little vin rouge, then a little more. While the beautiful woman, cleverly clad, that one expects are plentiful, the funniest part were the classic French folks - ubiquitous tiny dog in hand, men in canary yellow pants, pressed shirts, blue and white striped sweaters and the sea captn pipe - now that's yachting....

Middle Fork of the Salmon River 2006 : The Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho - class IV, wild and scenic in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. This is the longest free-flowing river in the lower 48 states. Designated by Congress in 1968 as a Wild and Scenic River, bounded by four National Forests and the Idaho Primitive Area, it is truly great to experience Nature at her best. It boasts the second-deepest canyon of any North American river. From our put-in to our take-out on The Main Salmon, 100 miles later, the river drops over 3,000 feet. From riffles to falls, there are 341 rapids sufficiently exciting to be rated ---23 Class III, seven Class IV.

Zermatt 3-06 : Dominated by Switzerland's most famous landmark - the Matterhorn - Zermatt is certainly the country's best all-round ski resort. Moreover, there are many who would have no hesitation in naming Zermatt as the Best Ski Resort in the World. Partly thanks to the sublime beauty of the Matterhorn, but also thanks to the lack of cars and the resort's great sense of tradition, Zermatt has a special, alluring atmosphere which draws visitors back time and time again.
Skiing in Zermatt is on a vast scale. Fabulous scenery captivates your attention during your ride up the mountains. It is easy to be dazzled by the mountain world around you, being surrounded by 29 peaks over 4000m (13,100ft). These are the highest mountains in Europe. And most always within sight is the moody and multi-faceted Matterhorn. Cable cars (aerial tramways) are common here - being very necessary in such an imposing mountain environment. Many soar silently across chasms and up cliff faces suspended thousands of feet above the snows. But it is when you get out and snap on your skis that the real action begins. No longer are you just an observer in this majestic mountain world. You are here to ski !

Distributor Council 2006 : DALLA TERRA FIRST ANNUAL DISTRIBUTOR COUNCIL
February 23, 2006 Napa, CA

A group of Dalla Terra's key distributors gathered in Napa for our first annual Distributor Council, an oppportunity to sit down with our partner distributors and discuss where the Fine Wine industry and Dalla Terra are today and where they may be in the next five years.

Basic questions:
Where is the fine wine market headed over the next 5 years and what proactive steps are we and our distributors taking to strategically position ourselves to prepare for this?

How are we, Dalla Terra and our distributors, responding to changes we see in today's marketplace to ensure our long-term success?

How can Dalla Terra evolve to improve our position within our distributors’ priorities and ensure continued future growth?

The response to the day long meeting was unanimously positive and agreed they would like return again next year.

Tuna off Baja Mexico - New Year's 2006 : We headed out of San Diego on the Independence, a new 112 ft sportfishing boat on an 8 day trip off-shore. Our targeted species was yellowfin tuna. We worked our way down the entire Baja peninsula and back again, fishing the many spots known to hold these fish- Uncle Sam's Bank, Potato Bank, Finger Bank, etc. In the end we had issues with rough weather making it difficult to spot the porpoise that the tuna often can be found under and then lost one of our engines when a water cooling impeller went out, forcing us to head back early due to the slow progress we'd make under one engine alone. Attached are many pix taken by my friend Barry who was the resident photographer on this trip as well as others (pix here are mixed), as well as some of my own.

Middle Fork of the Salmon River, Idaho : July 2005 found some friends and I running the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho, a river I'd been itching to run for over a decade. After 100 miles of boating and fly fishing in crystal clear whitewater we merged with the Main Salmon River and pulled out. It is one of the original eight rivers in the nation designated as Wild and Scenic on October 2, 1968.

Few places in America, and nowhere outside of Alaska, provide a Wilderness experience to match the sheer magnitude of the Frank Church-River of No Return, the second largest unit of the National Wilderness Preservation System in the Lower 48 (second in size only to California's Death Valley Wilderness). This area combines the old Idaho Primitive Area, the Salmon Breaks Primitive Area, territory on six national forests, and a small swath of land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Senator Frank Church played a key role in the passage of the Wilderness Act of 1964, and his name was added to the Wilderness in 1984, shortly before his death.

It is a land of clear rivers, deep canyons, and rugged mountains. Two white-water rivers draw many human visitors: the Main Salmon River, which runs west near the northern boundary; and the Middle Fork of the Salmon, which begins near the southern boundary and runs north for about 104 miles until it joins the Main. Reaching 6,300 feet from the river bottom, the canyon carved by the Main Salmon is deeper than most of the earth's canyons--including the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River--and this fast-moving waterway has been dubbed the River of No Return. In the northeastern corner of the Wilderness, the Selway River flows north into the nearby Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness (see below). Trout fishing usually rates from good to excellent, and I've had some of the best fly-fishing trips of my life here. The Middle Fork, the Selway, and a portion of the Main Salmon are Wild and Scenic Rivers. Unlike the sheer walls of the Grand Canyon, these rivers rush below wooded ridges rising steeply toward the sky, beneath eroded bluffs and ragged, solitary crags

If you haven't yet run the Middle Fork, get to it. = Brian =
